When designing lab workstations, the layout should not only meet experimental needs but also ensure safe evacuation in emergencies. In any situation, lab workers should have at least two exit routes. The walkways between benches should lead directly to corridors to allow for quick evacuation when needed.
Laboratory workstations come in three main types: double-sided island, peninsula, and single-sided wall benches. For double-sided island benches, a minimum distance of 130 cm is recommended. This allows for free movement on all sides, providing ample space for evacuation. If special equipment, such as gas cylinder storage, is needed, the distance should increase to 160–180 cm.
With back-to-back bench setups, a divider screen can be added in the middle of the walkway, especially when safety requires it. This screen should be made of non-flammable materials to prevent chemical accidents from affecting adjacent users. In such cases, the distance should also be slightly increased. For lab benches and fume hoods, maintain a gap of at least 125 cm.

Optimal Dimensions for Lab Workstations
Lab workstations should have suitable heights and widths for convenient operation. Generally, the bench height ranges from 85–90 cm, except for special experiments requiring custom heights. The standard width for bench surfaces is about 65 cm. If the bench needs to accommodate more equipment, the width can be increased for easier use.
For single-sided benches, the reagent shelf width should range from 20–30 cm, and the overall bench width should be 75–85 cm. For double-sided benches, the total width should be 150–160 cm to ensure comfort and efficiency.
Materials for Lab Workstations
The material of the laboratory workstation depends on the type of laboratory. Common options include steel and wood. For biochemical labs focused on microbiology, seamless white surfaces are preferred. Regardless of the material chosen, the countertop should be strong, flat, seamless, leak-proof, and resistant to wear, heat, and corrosion. It should also have sufficient hardness to prevent scratches but should not easily damage glassware.
Proper Placement of Laboratory Workstations
When installing lab benches, correct positioning is crucial. If the lab relies on natural light, benches should not run parallel to the windows. If workers have their backs to the window, shadows will fall on the work surface. Facing the window, on the other hand, can cause glare. Proper placement ensures comfortable and efficient working conditions.
