One University, Multiple Laboratory Requirements

A university laboratory project often involves several disciplines under one procurement plan. Chemistry, biology, physics, and teaching laboratories may share a building, but they do not share the same furniture requirements.

Chemistry laboratories need worktops compatible with their chemical inventory. Biology laboratories may require surfaces that tolerate frequent disinfection. Physics departments need stable structures for precision instruments and heavy equipment. Teaching laboratories prioritize durability, efficient student workflows, and straightforward maintenance.

ZH LABS supports university laboratory planning by matching furniture configurations to the function of each room. Our team can assist with furniture selection, CAD layouts, material recommendations, and project-specific configurations for new laboratories and renovation projects.

Whether a project covers one department or an entire academic building, the objective is the same: specify the right furniture for each laboratory instead of applying a single configuration everywhere.

Common Challenges in University Laboratory Projects

What makes university lab planning different?

1. Different Disciplines Need Different Materials

A single worktop specification may simplify purchasing, but it can create problems when laboratory conditions vary. Chemical exposure, disinfection routines, instrument loads, and temperature requirements all influence material selection.

Ansatz von ZH Labs:
Specify worktops and supporting structures according to each room’s chemical inventory, operating conditions, and equipment requirements.

2. Teaching Labs and Research Labs Have Different Priorities

Teaching laboratories accommodate repeated student use, frequent cleaning, and standardized experiments. Research laboratories may handle more complex reagents, specialized instruments, and changing experimental procedures.

Using the same configuration throughout a building can increase costs in some rooms while leaving others inadequately equipped.

Ansatz von ZH Labs:
Develop separate configurations for teaching, research, and specialist laboratories while maintaining consistency across the overall project.

3. Existing Buildings Limit Layout Options

University renovations must work within existing room dimensions, ceiling heights, ventilation routes, service connections, and access requirements. These constraints can affect the positioning of center benches, fume hoods, storage cabinets, and instrument stations.

Ansatz von ZH Labs:
Review available dimensions, utility locations, site photographs, and existing drawings before finalizing the furniture layout. Remote design coordination can help identify potential conflicts before manufacturing.

4. Procurement Requires Clear Technical Documentation

International university projects may require product specifications, material data, test reports, certificates, and relevant standards documentation. The applicable requirements depend on the product, destination market, and tender specifications.

Ansatz von ZH Labs:
Prepare available technical documentation for procurement review and identify any project-specific compliance requirements that need confirmation.

5. Maintenance Affects Long-Term Usability

Loose hardware, damaged worktops, worn hinges, and unavailable replacement parts can disrupt everyday laboratory operations. Initial purchase price alone does not reflect the full cost of maintaining laboratory furniture.

Ansatz von ZH Labs:
Consider replaceable components, accessible storage hardware, practical maintenance requirements, and agreed after-sales support when developing the specification.

Core Design and Compliance Considerations

Key factors to confirm before procurement

Material selection by discipline: Chemistry labs: epoxy resin for general acids and bases, PP for hydrofluoric acid or hot concentrated acids. Biology labs: 304 stainless steel standard, 316L for high-disinfection or BSL scenarios.
Physics/instrument labs: phenolic resin or epoxy with steel heavy-duty structure; 60 mm granite tops paired with vibration‑damping mounts shall be specified for precision balance and optical instrument applications.
CE scope: Fume hood CE marking per Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC covers the factory-supplied hood unit only; on-site installation, ductwork, and utilities are outside this scope.
Structural safety & standards: See toplevel Lab Solutions specifications for material limitations, loadcapacity statements and fullstandard lists.

Workflow Zones & Zoning Logic

University labs are best planned by workflow zone rather than by room alone. This keeps samples, people, and waste moving in one direction and reduces both contamination risk and travel time.

Zone	Function	Key Furniture
Receiving / Prep	Sample and reagent preparation	Wall bench, sink, reagent cabinet
Teaching Lab	Student experiments	Steel-wood student bench, demo bench, fume hood
Research Lab	Faculty and graduate research	All-steel bench, fume hood, instrument bench
Lagerung	Chemical and glassware storage	Corrosive cabinet, flammable liquid storage cabinet, glassware cabinet
Waste	Chemical waste segregation	Dedicated waste cabinet located near the exit

Shared prep and storage zones are best positioned between teaching and research areas, so that both are served without samples crossing laboratory boundaries. This is a movement and contamination-control logic; it is separate from the safety logic of segregating incompatible chemicals, which continues to apply within each storage zone.

University Laboratory Furniture Project Cases

Case 1: University Chemistry Building Renovation

The original benches used standard phenolic resin worktops and showed acid penetration and delamination within two years. During renovation, each room was assessed for reagent exposure: inorganic chemistry labs were upgraded to epoxy resin worktops, organic synthesis labs to PP worktops, with steel cabinets throughout. A three-year follow-up showed no visible corrosion on worktops and no structural deformation.

Case 2: University Biology Lab Upgrade

Existing steel-wood benches could not withstand frequent disinfectant wiping. The upgrade used 304 stainless steel worktops (standard) and steel cabinets with radiused sealed corners. For high-disinfection or BSL scenarios, 316L stainless steel worktops and stainless steel cabinets are available.

Case 3: University Physics Department Instrument Bench

The department needed benches to carry multiple HPLC systems and mass spectrometers, each over 200 kg. We supplied steel heavyduty center benches with a customized uniformly distributed load rating of 500 kg/m². For the precision balances, 60 mm granite tops were fitted on vibrationdamping mounts to isolate the instruments from footfall and equipment vibration. Utility connections were planned together with the furniture layout. No rework was required after delivery.

University Lab Furniture FAQ

What is the difference between teaching lab and research lab furniture?

Teaching laboratories typically prioritize durability, ease of cleaning, student access, and cost-effective standardized layouts. Research laboratories may need more specialized chemical resistance, instrument support, storage, and flexibility. Both should be specified according to their actual activities.

How can furniture be planned for a university laboratory renovation?

Begin with available room drawings, verified dimensions, ceiling heights, doorways, utility positions, ventilation connections, and equipment requirements. Remote CAD coordination can support preliminary planning and identify potential conflicts. An on-site survey may still be necessary when measurements or existing conditions cannot be verified remotely.

Which worktop material is best for university laboratories?

There is no single best material for every laboratory. Epoxy resin can suit many general chemical applications; PP can be considered for selected corrosive environments; stainless steel may suit certain biology and preparation areas; and specialist granite-topped benches may be appropriate for precision instruments. Chemical compatibility and operating conditions should determine the final choice.

What load capacity should university laboratory workbenches support?

The required capacity depends on equipment weight, bench dimensions, support structure, load distribution, and safety factors. The project specification should distinguish uniformly distributed load from concentrated point load. Where concentrated-load performance has not been tested, it should not be represented as verified.

What documents should be included in a university lab furniture tender?

Depending on the tender, documentation may include product specifications, material data, dimensional drawings, load ratings, applicable test reports, certificates, installation requirements, and warranty or after-sales terms. Confirm which documents are required and available for each product before submission.

Can one supplier support multiple laboratory disciplines in the same university?

A single supplier may coordinate furniture across chemistry, biology, physics, and teaching laboratories while specifying different configurations for each room. The project still requires discipline-specific material selection, equipment coordination, utility planning, and confirmation of applicable standards.
